The day got off to a flying start. I moved the irrigation wheel to the next alpaca paddock and started to water. After a while I could see it wasn't reeling in the water canon as it should. A close inspection revealed that the mechanism to spread the hose across the drum as it is reeled in had broken and the wheel had ground to a halt. The irrigation company will be out tomorrow to fix the problem meanwhile irrigation has stopped!
In the afternoon we had a farm visit from a lovely lady who lives locally and is thinking of getting into alpacas. So spent a very pleasant hour in the paddock with the alpacas talking about alpacas and answering as many questions as I could....she was taking written notes which is always a good idea in these situations.
After she left I "topped" one of the alpaca paddocks. Topping is just farming talk for mowing the top off the grass. Essentially grass grows in three stages so its important to "top" the grass before it puts all its energy into the seed head.
The fertilizer we spread earlier in the spring is showing real benefit now and the hay field looks simply beautiful.
Its now coming up to 8pm so I am going to do some filing of paperwork and answer a handful of e-mail questions which have come in over he last few days. So if you are reading this and wondering where your reply is...I am going to do it right now!
