There is no such thing as a typical farm visit and today was no exception. We had a call from a lady living only a few miles away to ask if she could come and talk alpacas.
She was very well informed and had already done a great deal of research and had a stream of really good questions for us to discuss when she arrived. I am sure we were no where near as well educated when we bought our first alpacas. But this lady was particularly well informed and had already visited a few local farms as part of her research.
Even though she lives only a few miles away she has predator problems that we don't have in the shape of bears and cougars. Which made us realise just how fortunate we are hardly having a worry apart from the odd coyote.
We spent the best part of two hours looking at animals and fleece samples and discussing the pros and cons of just about every aspect of alpaca breeding under the sun. Its fascinating helping someone sort out the various facts, fashions and fantasies that float around our industry. Plus just going through your own values and beliefs out loud is a great way to get your own thoughts about alpaca farming properly organised.
