I started the first of three consecutive days of worming today. previously we have used paste but this time on the recomendation of our vet Tara Timpson we are trying a liquid wormer, Panacur Suspension (10% Fenbendazole) , for the control of large and small strongyles, pinworms, and roundworms. It feels much harder to administer the liquid in an accurate dose but I suspect we would be better with a drenching gun than a simple syringe. If you have a prescription you can buy Panacur on-line at
KV Vet Supply Its currently about $110 for 1000cc which is enough to treat about twenty five 150lb alpacas. So about $4.50 per animal.
Dr Tara Timpson explains her technique:
"There is a technique that works better with alpacas as well as some dosing syringes (one made by jorvet) where the part that goes in the mouth is made of brass and has an angle which is more conducive to fitting it further back in the mouth and it doesn't get crunched by the molars. I like to put may arm around the alpacas, then neck insert my finger in the buccal pouch (technical term for cheek or lip) of the side opposite that I am standing taking care not to get my finger crunched by the molars and then slide the dosing syringe beyond my finger into the mouth, I usually have pretty good success this way."
What could possibly go wrong?
The mass e-mail about the Ideal Alpaca Community Newsletter, which I mentioned yesterday, went out last night as planned. I have had about 5 replies so far all with interesting and relevant articles to go into forthcoming issues of the newsletter. Everything from premature alpaca cria to building alpaca barns. Also quite a few people wanting to know how to sign up for the IAC Newsletter. I am really pleased people are so willing to contribute and share their experiences.
If you have an interesting article or story to tell. then please send it my way.
