Dr Leslie Richardson and vet technician Anita visited the farm on Friday to do some work with the alpacas.
Three of the females needed an ultrasound scan to confirm their pregnancies which I am pleased to say went very very well and all three girls are coming along nicely. The only major hurdle between now and a happy birthing event is shearing. We will almost certainly shear the pregnant girls while they are standing, indeed we will do all the alpacas that way if possible.
Dr Richardson also checked out the three alpacas that were born last winter and for Bandelier she gave him a very thorough health check as he may be travelling shortly and will need vet papers. Again everyone checked out just fine.
The last task of the afternoon was to file the teeth on a castrated male alpaca called Lucky Luciano who has a very unfortunate bite. Dr Richardson checked his heart then gave him a small shot of "torb" and within 15 minutes he was completely relaxed and didn't bat an eyelid while his teeth were re-profiled.
This round of vet work was a great way to end the week which had contained plenty of ups and downs...
Its amazing how much easier it is to sleep at night when all is well on the farm.
