As I promised here are some more tales and pictures from shearing day at Mulberry Alpacas.
Allan Godsiff the shearer is a native of New Zealand but now lives near Bend in Oregon, which as everyone knows is the world centre of alpaca expertise.
Allan will only shear the alpacas standing up he doesn’t do any tied down alpacas, this suits the way we like to handle our alpacas and you would be surprised how the vast majority of alpacas simply stand there while he does his thing. Having seen this done in other ways and other places I know that it is one of those classic situations where a true expert makes it look so very easy.
Don’t think for one moment this is the fad of a small farm he is also used by bigger farms the largest of which has over 1600 alpacas…I daren’t begin to think about shearing that number of alpacas…..
We had plenty of volunteers this year and it made everything so much easier…well don’t take my word for it check out these photographs and you will see the relaxed and fun atmosphere in the shearing barn…its taken us three years to get the fundamentals right and work out what we want.
In the second picture you can see my wife Jo to the left and holding the alpacas ears is a Swedish friend of ours called Ann-Britt. Before shearing day Ann-Britt had never touched an alpaca in her life before….as you can she had a great time and we were very grateful for her help. I have to say she is a natural with alpacas….
