I really get the feeling that the weather here at Mulberry alpacas has tipped imperceptibly from spring into summer and everywhere is starting to warm through. It is one of the real joys of living here in Southern Oregon that we have four very distinct and reliable seasons……even though we are I guess in the grips of climate change like the rest of the planet.
As the alpaca shearing was last weekend I am very grateful that the temperature is rising and that it looks set to stay fair….well I felt guilty for relieving the alpacas of their fleeces when it started raining the following day.
Just after alpaca shearing ended last Sunday our eldest boy Jamie headed off for a few months in Australia and has reported back to say he is having a wonderful time. I haven’t been there myself but I believe some of the finest alpacas in the world now live down under….. where of course winter is just starting.
As the weather is now warming up its time to start the irrigation system in earnest so today we will start the irrigation cycle, which will run for the whole summer. The alpaca pastures can dry out very quickly when the warm summer winds start to blow through the valley. As we water the alpaca pastures in a set sequence we can keep the whole place green. However, it does mean that we have to be irrigating at least one of the alpaca pastures every day so there are no holidays now until September…..its a great lifestyle.
