Every two weeks (or fortnight as we would say in England) we get to run flood irrigation into the hay field.
Its quite a tricky business ensuring that the water spreads evenly across the whole ten acre field and that every part gets its fair share of the water.
If I had money to waste I would probably buy a water wheel but the hay field just doesn't generate enough income to justify the capital expense.
All those hours spent as a young boy damming streams in my native Yorkshire have now come into great use...how wrong my mother was...
My trusty assistant in this endeavour is of course Gifford.
To the untrained eye this may look like Gifford stood in an irrigation ditch cooling down his paws. But you would be wrong. his look of total concentration tells you that he is measuring not only depth of water but also flow rate...man this is one smart dog.
Well thats all for today Gifford and I will be back again tomorrow. Regulars to my Blog may well have spotted that Gifford has had a haircut for the summer. This helps keep him cool and stops the dreaded foxtails sticking to him.
